How will it affect those with medical aids (community-rated health insurance)?

The view from the white paper is that medical aids in the future will only be an additional voluntary cover and that most of the cover currently provided by the medical aids will be replaced by the NHI fund.

Where is the money going to come from?

Basic structures of the NHI Fund are being put in place in preparation for its operationalisation. The creation of the NHI Fund will entail the establishment of: functional, governance and accreditation structures and purchasing systems; risk mitigation systems; health technology assessments; as well as systems for monitoring and evaluation.

When will it happen?

Implementation of NHI will take place in three phases over a fourteen year period. The first phase takes place over five years and includes strengthening the service delivery platform and improving the overall quality of service in the public health sector.
